Social media giant Facebook Inc. banned a large number of prominent accounts which promotes white nationalism on its platform on Thursday.
These accounts banned from Facebook and its owned company ‘Instagram’. Due to new enforcement such as the anti-Muslim figurehead Laura Loomer and the conspiracy philosopher Alex Jones. Jones was already barred from the platform but still had an account on Instagram and it is no longer available from Thursday.
A Facebook representative said, “We have always try to prevent organizations or individuals that promote hate and violence. The process for assessing potential violators is broad and it is what allows us to remove or ban such accounts today.”
The company also said it will remove accounts of Louis Farrakhan of the Nation which is relating to Islam group. This group is promoting anti-Semitic posts on Facebook.
Facebook always prevent accounts who are engaging in hate and violence. The company has often tried to control hate speech on its platform in recent days.
Cristina Lopez G, Deputy Director, America, said- figures like Loomer, Yiannopoulus, and Jones were able to raise a high reach through Facebook.
She also said, “This is a step in an appropriate direction. And it shows precisely why Facebook must think about enforcement in a more general way.
“Facebook can aid to curb the extent of hate, extremism, and bigotry which grew on the platform.”
Facebook said it will endure its policy of removing accounts which support or praise hate speech on the platform.
These bans outline the arbitrary nature of Facebook’s decision to block individuals from spreading on its platform.
However, in recent days, Facebook has become progressively willing to issue absolute bans against individuals thought to extend hate speech.
